The blog’s a bit late today, so I ought apologize. Oh well. The US women tore apart Colombia with a not-flattering 3-0 scoreline, and that took up a portion of my morning after finally waking up. Nice having football on weekend mornings again, I’ve to say. No 7 a.m. kickoffs, though, please.
What’s new in the RSL world? Not terribly much. We’ve picked up a few players on trial, but I’d be surprised if we signed a player at this point. Despite our recent injury problems having taken a toll, I think we’re starting to get clear of them, and we do have a fairly deep squad. Given that we’re never going to be a particularly rich club I suspect, we won’t be making huge signings any time soon. We could see one of our younger players moved on, perhaps a forward — Aghasyan and Toia have not been setting things alight, though I hold out hope for the both. Check out Keepin’ It Real for more details on these trialists. Certainly some promising talents in the bunch, but it’s probably no more than simply keeping our eye out for gold star signings on the cheap. This wouldn’t surprise me, as we have a structure that seems to be alive with awareness, and that’s hugely encouraging.
As KIR indicates, we do need a quality attacking midfielder to fill Javi’s boots for the season, and perhaps for a longer period of time — our Argentine playmaker isn’t going to get younger during this injury outage, after all. We do also need a left-footed left back (can anybody verify which foot is Wingert’s dominant? I assume he’s left-footed) to either deputise for the too often injured Chris Wingert, as Jason Kreis has indicated in recent weeks.
So while I accept that a trialist could ink something longer with the club, I’m not sure we’ll find a capable attacking midfielder playmaker in these. There are only so many good players in this position: It’s one that requires intelligence, awareness, fitness, stamina, and pure ability. To find all these qualities in a player without a club is unlikely. That said, the transfer window opens in a couple weeks (July 15) and we could see something come of that.
A more focused match preview should come tomorrow, and there’s plenty of MLS to catch on TV today, so enjoy the weekend and prepare for a rip-roaring celebration after we again destroy New England at our fortress.
Come on you Claret and Cobalt!
