Well, we can all be glad June is over, can’t we? Our run of form was largely dismal, and while there are certainly some positives, as I discussed yesterday, I think we can all breathe a little easier now that things are looking up. July should mark our return to the title race, our return to full strength.
Will we win every match we play? We can hope for it, but that’s probably unrealistic. We kick off the month with a patriotic home stand against New England Revolution, and four of our five league matches are at home. If there were ever a more vital time to pick up all the points, this stretch will be it: Our home form may have been disrupted, our fortress may have shown signs that the structure wasn’t entirely sound, but the rebuilding process must start.
The squad will already be gearing up for the Revolution match, and as such, it’s been relatively quiet. There’s been some talk about why the club is retiring our number 9, Jason Kreis’s old squad number, and the club addressed those questions. I’m not entirely for this, but when an owner demands it, I suppose there’s not much to be done. Jason Kreis certainly has been big for the club, and it's nice to see him honored, but I've got to wonder if there's a different way. More on that at some point, I'm sure.
Moving on, world football has been incredibly interesting this summer, and I have to say, this beats a World Cup summer for me. Women’s World Cup? Check. Under-17 World Cup? Check. Under-20s later? Check. There’s been no lack of interesting things to watch, and I have to compliment the efforts of ESPN. The coverage has had its flaws, but it’s been reasonably good for something I’m sure gets less attention than the men’s trophy. Good on them.
Right, a short one today, but when more happens, there’ll be more to write about.
Come on you Claret and Cobalt!
