MLS, drunk on English ale, continues to pimp clubs

·

A bit of non-RSL news today as we bear the long break left by Vancouver’s terrible sense of timing. The MLS is still pushing these international friendlies ever so hard — going so far as using the headline of “Five head-to-head matches to provide ultimate verdict” to discuss matches against English Premier League sides. Really, it must be so incredibly difficult to be an MLS headline writer, what with the being asked to come up with such utter nonsense. But wait, there’s more!

Kick Off: MLS set to give EPL a run for its money tonight

If there is one among us who thinks that these matches either prove something or that they will be likely to show that the MLS is somehow superior to the English Premier League, perhaps they should come forward and offer an argument for their opinion.

The MLS, distracted from its own competition, is trying to attract the attention of these utter Johns of clubs, here for a buck and a fan and not much else. The MLS, drunk on the flirtation of the two big clubs from Manchester, has fluttered their collective eyelashes at any and all suitors, selling time, teams, and players to the highest bidder.

Does anybody really believe that the MLS clubs involved will give the EPL clubs visiting during their preseason a real “run for (their) money”? And even if they somehow manage a draw or a win, does that prove much, but that they simply don’t care enough about the league?

The absurdity of the whole lot is maddening. Perhaps it started as some lingering bitterness over the Vancouver match, but I hope the whole of the Real Salt Lake fanbase sits up and take notice how the league is pimping out its clubs. That we are not involved is a testament to the vision of Jason Kreis and Garth Lagerwey: Aim for trophies, not friendlies.

Right, so a short one, but more to come tomorrow. I’ll address attendances through July 18 across the league — but if you want to take a look at the data, have at it.

‘Till tomorrow.

Come on you Claret and Cobalt!
