Real Salt Lake added two to its roster on deadline day: Yordany Alvarez, a midfielder who defected from Cuba in 2008, joins from Orlando City following their 2011 USL Pro championship, and Nico Muniz, a homegrown prospect from the RSL-AZ Academy.
Alvarez, 26, was named the USL Pro MVP and has been on trial with Real Salt Lake since the end of the USL Pro season. He was one of several Cuban under-23 footballers to defect to the U.S. in 2008.
Muniz, a midfielder who came through the MLS’s first residential academy in Casa Grande, Ariz., is somewhat of an unknown element but is certainly well-rated in the system. He committed to Georgetown for the coming year, but he now joins Donny Toia as a homegrown player on the roster.
Keepin’ it Real spoke to Nico in February. The piece is well worth a read.
